The UN is looking for a remote contractor to help analyze how SDG localization is working worldwide. You will produce research, update guidance materials, and support a Mayors Forum. Below is exactly what you need to know to put together a strong application.

Role SDG Localization Analysis · Individual Contractor
Duration 65 working days (possible extension)
Location Fully home‑based
Deadline 10 June 2026
Pay UN consultant daily rate (estimated $300–600/day, negotiable based on experience)
What you will actually work on

You will support the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) in three main areas:

  • Research and analysis – Identify best practices in SDG localization from UN DESA’s network. Help produce a product for the 2027 SDG Summit. Update the Global Guiding Elements on Voluntary Local Reviews using lessons from projects in Italy and Africa.
  • Coordination and partnerships – Help organize the 2026 International Mayors Forum in Quito, Ecuador (October 2026). Draft background materials and work with national consultants in project countries.
  • Awareness and knowledge sharing – Create social media content highlighting SDG localization successes. Support mapping of UN capacity‑building materials and identify gaps.
What they are looking for (your ticket in)
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in development policy, economics, social sciences, or related field. A Bachelor’s + 2 extra years of experience can substitute.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in national development planning, local development research, SDG localization analysis, data visualization, or training local governments.
  • You should know the Voluntary National Review (VNR) and Voluntary Local Review (VLR) processes inside out. Familiarity with the SDGs is a must.
  • Fluent English (written and oral). Another UN language is a plus but not required.
  • Previous experience with the UN or its agencies is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, plus the ability to work in a team remotely.

Pro tip: In your application, mention specific VLRs or VNRs you have worked on. Show that you understand how local governments actually implement the SDGs.

Pay, hours, and how remote works

Pay: The UN does not list a fixed amount in the job opening. For similar individual contractor roles, daily rates typically range from $300 to $600 USD per day, depending on your experience level and location. You will negotiate this with DESA if you are selected. No hidden fees – the UN never charges applicants.

Hours: The contract is for 65 working days, not necessarily consecutive. You manage your own schedule as long as deliverables are met. It is not a 9‑to‑5 job; you work when you are productive, but you will need to coordinate with a global team across time zones.

Remote setup: You can work from anywhere in the world. You need a reliable internet connection and a computer. There is no requirement to come to New York, though occasional virtual meetings will be scheduled.
