How to get the UNDP AI and Mediation Internship 2026: $1,000 a month to build real AI tools for conflict resolution
Guide published 3 June 2026 · Open to external applicants
The UN Ombudsman Office, which serves UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNOPS, and UN Women, is looking for an intern who can actually build things with AI. The role sits at an unusual intersection: mediation practice and generative AI tooling. You will not be writing research memos. You will be shipping working prototypes, including chatbots, workflow automations, case data tools, and an AI-judge concept trained on real UNDT and UNAT case law.
- AI chatbots using Copilot and Gemini Guide staff across five UN agencies to the right resources based on each organization's own rules and policies.
- AI Judge prototype Build decision-support spaces using UNDT (UN Dispute Tribunal) and UNAT (Appeals Tribunal) case law as the knowledge base. This is the most technically ambitious deliverable on the list.
- Workflow automation Automate case management templates and reporting for the Mediation Unit so the team spends less time on paperwork.
- Case data dashboards Structure mediation data into snippets and visualizations that surface patterns the office can actually act on.
- AI training tools Research and propose generative AI applications for mediation training programs and live events.
All development uses UN-authorized tools. Copilot and Gemini are the primary platforms. You do not need to bring your own infrastructure.
- Education Key detail Enrolled in, or recently graduated within one year from, a technology degree: Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Software Engineering, or similar. Law, HR, Psychology, and social science degrees are also accepted if you can demonstrate strong, hands-on AI or automation skills.
- Technical skills Demonstrated work or coursework in AI, automation, data analysis, and software tooling. A solid working knowledge of Copilot and Gemini is specifically required, not just theoretical familiarity.
- Mediation interest (mandatory) You need a genuine interest in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation, arbitration, and negotiation. No law degree required. The office will notice if you are faking it in the cover letter.
- Language Fluent written and spoken English. Other UN languages are an advantage.
- Desirable but not required Prior experience with workflow automation, data visualization, or prototyping tools. Generative AI project experience puts you ahead.
Show a real project, not a list of tools you know. In your cover letter, describe one specific chatbot, automation, or analysis you built. Name the tools. Mention Copilot or Gemini if you have used them in any capacity.
Connect AI to conflict resolution in your own words. Even without formal ADR training, explain why dispute resolution interests you. Give one concrete example of a workplace or community situation where AI could have helped.
Demonstrate remote collaboration experience. This role spans multiple time zones and five agencies. Mention your experience with virtual teams and tools like Slack, Zoom, or any project management platform.
Read the Ombudsman website before writing anything. Visit fpombudsman.org and reference something specific. One sentence that shows you understand what the office actually does is worth more than two pages of generic UN enthusiasm.
Apply this week, not on June 18. UNDP reviews on a rolling basis. The deadline is not a start date. Early applications get more attention and more time for the hiring team to act on them.
- Location choice You pick either fully remote (anywhere) or in-person at UNDP New York. Once you choose, the arrangement is fixed for the entire internship. There is no switching midway.
- Time zone requirement for remote If you work remotely, you must be available during New York Eastern Time business hours. This is non-negotiable regardless of where you are based.
- Costs if you choose New York Travel, visa, accommodation, and health insurance are entirely your responsibility. UNDP covers only the stipend. Build a realistic budget before committing to the in-person option.
- Health insurance Every intern must submit proof of enrollment in a valid health insurance plan before the internship begins. This applies whether you are in New York or working remotely.
- Visa for New York You arrange your own visa. UNDP does not sponsor G-4 visas for interns. International applicants should research visa requirements for the US J-1 or B-1 categories well in advance.
- Extension After the initial 3 months, a further 3-month extension may be offered, taking the total to 6 months. It is not automatic.
Submit your application as a single PDF file containing: Resume (2 pages maximum), Cover letter (1 page), Academic transcripts.
- No prior UN experience needed This is genuinely open to external applicants. You do not need a previous UN internship on your CV to be competitive.
- A real pathway into UNDP staff roles Interns may apply for UNDP staff positions during or after the internship. There is no automatic conversion, but the access and visibility are real.
- No fees, ever UNDP charges nothing to apply. If anyone asks you to pay for an application, processing, or training fee, it is a scam.
- Active diversity mandate UNDP explicitly encourages applications from marginalized groups, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented populations. This is not boilerplate. The office means it.
